What is a Survivor Pool? Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve spent time around sports bettors, especially during football season, you’ve probably heard someone say:"I was alive in my survivor pool until Week 6… then the Jets ruined me."

Survivor pools, otherwise known as elimination pools or knockout pools, are one of the most popular ways to bet on the NFL -- and sometimes other sports.

They’re simple, strategic, and, yes, absolutely brutal.

Here’s everything you need to know about survivor pools: how they work, why they’re so addictive, and how to improve your chances of surviving.

Get started by signing up with Wager Relay today!

What is a Survivor Pool?

At its core, a survivor pool is a contest where you pick one team to win each week.

If your team wins, you survive and move on to the next week.If your team loses, you’re eliminated.

Sounds easy, right? Just pick the biggest favorite each week and cruise to the prize. But here’s the catch:

You can only pick each team once per season.

That means if you pick the Chiefs in Week 1, you can’t pick them again no matter how much of a lock they look later in the season.

How Does a Survivor Pool Work?

Most survivor pools follow a standard structure:

Everyone in the pool pays an entry fee (or it’s free with bragging rights).

Each participant picks one team to win each week.

If your team wins, you move on. If not, you’re out.

The last person (or people) left standing win the pot.

Some pools also include:

  • Double entries: Some allow you to enter two picks each week for more flexibility.

  • Tiebreakers: If multiple people survive to the end, some use a points system or split the pot.

  • Second-chance pools: If everyone loses in a week, the remaining players start over.

At Wager Relay, for example, our contests give two entries to help you survive longer — and we use a point-based leaderboard to break ties, so there’s always a clear winner. That adds a different dynamic than most other survivor contests.

Why Play in a Survivor Pool?

There are a few reasons survivor pools have become a staple:

Simplicity

You don’t need to understand spreads, totals, or prop bets. You just pick one team to win.

Strategy

It’s not just about picking the biggest favorite every week because you have to plan ahead. Do you save the Chiefs for later? Do you take a risk early to preserve stronger teams?

Big Rewards

Survivor pools often pay out big prizes, especially in larger contests. There's a low entry point into a contest with a big payout available in the end. No need to rebuy or place new "bets".

Sweat Factor

Every week feels like a playoff game. You don’t just root for your team, you root against the teams your opponents picked.

Survivor Pool Strategy Tips

Here’s where most beginners go wrong: they only focus on this week. Here are a few tips to help you last longer in your pools:

Plan ahead. Look at the schedule for the next 3–4 weeks and map out who you want to save for later.

Avoid obvious picks (sometimes). If everyone picks the same team and they lose, you all go out together — but if you take a contrarian pick that wins, you gain a huge edge. It's important to keep in mind the size of the contest and the point in the season. Smaller contests mean you may want to play it safer. In large contests, you usually need to take a risk for a chance at the grand prize.

Stay disciplined. That said, don't overthink it and pick a risky underdog just to be different. Survivorship is the name of the game. There's a time and place for those risks, and not every risk has to be a major one.

Track entries. If your pool allows two picks per week (like ours), use them strategically to hedge and extend your life.

Which Sports Have Survivor Pools?

Survivor pools are most common in NFL, but you can find them in:

  • NCAA Football

  • NBA

  • MLB

  • NHL

  • Even PGA Tour (picking golfers to make the cut or win)

Each sport has its quirks, but the NFL is perfect because of the weekly schedule and high variance.

Why Wager Relay Survivor Pools Are Different

At Wager Relay, we designed our survivor contests to fix some of the biggest frustrations we saw elsewhere:

  • We give two entries so you survive longer.

  • We use a points-based leaderboard to break ties (no messy splits).

  • We run pools across multiple sports, not just NFL.

  • No rake! All of the money entered goes straight into the pot.

We want survivor pools to be fun, competitive, and rewarding — even if the Jets ruin your Sunday.
